Jean Prouvé

1888 - 1965 (Netherlands) Born in the city of Utrecht in 1888, over the next eight decades Gerrit T. Rietveld would grow from the son of a joiner to the most influential and beloved Dutch furniture designer and architect of the 20th Century, with his cutting-edge take on classic form and structure. Despite his love of using wood, a lifelong influence from his joiner father, he was noted for his use of plastics, as part of the 'De Stijl' movement of the 1910s. This all stemmed from his belief that furniture should be as easy to reproduce as possible, allowing the ordinary working public to own and enjoy them. However, one of his best-loved products was 1934's angular, eye-catching Zig-Zag Chair, which ranks among his greatest works, along with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Rietveld Schroder House, upon both of which he served as head architect. "With this chair an attempt has been made to have every part simple and in its most elementary form in accordance with function and material."
